چکیده

This paper explores the possibilities of using Ka-band Doppler radar, microwave radiometer, and lidar as a means of retrieving cloud condensation nucleus (CCN) properties in the stratocumulus-capped marine boundary layer. The retrieval is based on the intimate relationship between the cloud drop number concentration, the vertical air motion at cloud base, and the CCN activation spectrum parameters. The CCN properties that are sought are the C and k parameters in the N 5 CS k relationship, although activation spectra based on the lognormal distribution of particles is also straightforward. Cloud droplet concentration at cloud base is retrieved from a Doppler cloud radar combined with a microwave radiometer following a previously published technique. Cloud base is determined from a lidar or ceilometer. Vertical velocity just above cloud base is determined from the vertically pointing Doppler cloud radar. By combining the simultaneous retrievals of drop number and vertical velocity, and assuming theoretical relationships between these parameters and the subcloud aerosol parameters, the C parameter can be derived, under the assumption of a fixed k. If a calibrated backscatter lidar measurement is available, retrieval of both C and k parameters is possible. The retrieval is demonstrated for a dataset acquired during the Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment using a least squares minimization technique. Sensitivity to assumptions used in the retrieval is investigated. It is suggested that this technique may afford the acquisition of long-term datasets for climate monitoring purposes. Further investigation with focused experiments designed to address the issue more rigorously is required.

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Three-Dimensional Wind Retrieval: Application of MUSCAT to Dual-Doppler Lidar

During the field campaign of the Terrain-induced Rotor Experiment (T-REX) in the spring of 2006, Doppler lidar measurements were taken in the complex terrain of the Californian Owens Valley for six weeks. While fast three-dimensional (3D) wind analysis from measured radial wind components is well established for dual weather radars, only the feasibility was shown for dual-Doppler lidars. A comp...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE An Automated Algorithm for Detection of Hydrometeor Returns in Micropulse Lidar Data

A cloud detection algorithm for a low power micropulse lidar is presented that attempts to identify all of the significant power returns from the vertical column above the lidar at all times. The main feature of the algorithm is construction of lidar power return profiles during periods of clear sky against which cloudy-sky power returns are compared. This algorithm supplements algorithms desig...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE High Aitken Nucleus Concentrations above Cloud Tops in the Arctic

Airborne measurements in the Arctic in spring show large increases in the concentrations of particles with diameters below about 0.1 mm just above the tops of stratus clouds when the water-vapor mixing ratio is relatively high in these regions. Low temperatures and low particle surface areas may also favor the appearance of these particles. Particles produced above stratus clouds could be a wid...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Vertical Structure of Misocyclones along a Narrow Cold Frontal Rainband

Five misocyclones occurring along a narrow cold frontal rainband (NCFR) were detected by single, X-band Doppler radar at Yokosuka, Japan on April 20, 2006. Each of the misocyclones, which formed in succession in the core and gap regions of the meandering NCFR over a period of 30 minutes, had a short lifetime. Three of the five misocyclones generated near the surface and reached altitudes of up ...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE A Combined Wind Profiler and Polarimetric Weather Radar Method for the Investigation of Precipitation and Vertical Velocities

A method is presented by which combined S-band polarimetric weather radar and UHF wind profiler observations of precipitation can be used to extract the properties of liquid phase hydrometeors and the vertical velocity of the air through which they are falling. Doppler spectra, which contain the air motion and/or fall speed of hydrometeors, are estimated using the vertically pointing wind profi...
